EuPRAXIA Seminar with a focus on diode lasers for the next generation of ultra-high energy laser applications

The next seminar in the series will take place on Friday 17th April at 11am UK time.  Dr Paul Crump, Head of Photonics Lab, High-Power Diode Lasers at the Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, Leibniz-Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik, will present his seminar, diode lasers for the next generation of ultra-high energy laser applications, from direct material processing to inertial fusion energy.

About the talk


High power GaAs-based diode lasers underly the worlds’ largest markets and enable key emerging applications, playing an essential enabling role in realising high energy pulse laser systems such as the EuPRAXIA Laser, being the source of all the photons used. We review how innovation in design and technology is overcoming limits to power, efficiency, beam properties, and yield, supporting the requirements of coming applications from secondary source generation through to inertial fusion energy.


About the speaker


Paul Crump (Senior Member, IEEE) received the B.A. (Hons.) degree in natural science (physics) from Oxford University, Oxford, U.K., in 1992, and the doctoral degree in physics from Nottingham University, Nottingham, U.K., in 1996. His thesis dealt with experimental studies of 2D electrical transport effects in semiconductor heterostructures. From 1996 to 2001, he was with Agilent Technologies Corporation, Ipswich, U.K., where he helped develop high-performance single-mode InP-based laser diodes. In 2001, he joined nLight Photonics Corporation, Vancouver, WA, USA, where he helped develop high-power, high-efficiency GaAs, and InP-based broad-area diode lasers and bars. In 2007, he joined the Ferdinand-Braun-Institut (FBH), Berlin, Germany, where he leads the High-Power Diode Laser Lab that develops high performance large-area diode lasers and their modules. He holds a visiting Professor position with the University of Glasgow, and is an elected member of the IEEE Photonics Board of Governors.
